Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common health condition involving a collapse or partial blockage of the upper airway while an individual is sleeping. Though often associated with snoring, obstructive sleep apnea can cause a cascade of effects as a result of disrupted sleep from poor breathing. Awakenings from sleep apnea can lead to daytime drowsiness, fatigue, poor concentration, and irritable mood. Each stoppage of breathing stresses the body and can cause oxygen levels to drop, blood pressure to spike, and heart to race. This effect occurring for several hours per night can increase the risk of long-term health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, irregular heart rhythms, and stroke. In the vast majority of individuals, diagnosis can be made accurately through home sleep apnea testing.

Testing is straightforward and involves the shipment of a small device to your home which includes an elastic band around the chest with a small recording device attached, a cannula into the front edge of the nose, and a heart rate/oxygen sensor over the finger. The device can record a full period of sleep and be placed in a package for shipment return to be picked up the next day by a commercial carrier. The data from the monitor will be uploaded, analyzed, and interpreted with a report sent to your ordering provider. ReLACS Health uses the CleveMed SleepView® monitor and the snoring, analysis, and interpretation will be performed by Dr. Berkowski.

The cost of a home sleep apnea test through ReLACS Health is $350 for non-members and requires a provider order. You must be in Michigan or Ohio when the test is performed. Home sleep apnea testing may cost $500-$1000 or more out-of-pocket at most conventional sleep centers or > $2500 for an in-lab overnight sleep study (polysomnogram or PSG), which is often unnecessary to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea for the majority of individuals and simply done to generate revenue from insurance. Other, more affordable home sleep apnea testing companies may leave doubt as to the quality of the study or the interpretation.
